Kaldi-The Shepherd to have the first Sip of Coffee

Have you ever thought of who was the person behind starting the day with your favorite cup of coffee? It all started with the legendary man Kaldi or Khalid, who was a simple goat herder. Kaldi was an Ethiopian from the 9th century.

One day, while tending to his goats in the Ethiopian highlands, Kaldi noticed that his goats became unusually energetic after consuming the red berries from a certain tree. He was curious about it, so he ate some of the berries and felt more stimulated. He experienced a similar boost in energy and alertness.

Kaldi thought to report the whole thing to the abbot of the local monastery. The abbot was also astonished to hear the story. He became scared too, as he felt that the red berries could be the result of some evil act by the demons. So, the abbot decided to burn them up. Then the smoke from that fire created a strange but pleasant smell. Many people in the locality came to see what that fragrance was. The crowd loved the aroma and wondered how this beautiful smell could be associated with an evil act by the demons. The abbot then thought to do some experiment. He took the roasted berries. The berries turned into hard beans. He and his assistants then ground the beans and brewed them in boiling water. That was how the first cup of coffee came into the hands of men.

The people in the monastery drank the coffee. They found some interesting facts. They became energetic, and the drink had kept them awake for longer to concentrate on their night prayers. This is how the journey of the stimulating beverage started in the Arabian Peninsula and slowly spread worldwide.

There is no certainty that the whole story is absolutely true, but this is the most popularly known story about the origin of coffee in history.
