Green Coffee-A New Hype in Weight Management



The hype around green coffee began to gain traction in the early 2010s, primarily due to its association with weight loss and other health benefits. One of the key catalysts for this hype was some studies around 2012 about diabetes, metabolic syndrome and obesity, which suggested that green coffee bean extract could aid in weight loss.

Green coffee refers to unroasted coffee beans sourced from Coffea fruits like Coffea arabica and Coffea canephora. It boasts higher levels of chlorogenic acid compared to its roasted coffee beans.

The main difference between roasted and unroasted beans is the presence of chlorogenic acid, which is only present in raw beans. Chlorogenic acid is destroyed when the coffee bean is given heat. So this acid is only found in green coffee beans.

Chlorogenic acid found in green coffee is believed to offer potential health advantages. It could potentially impact blood vessel function, leading to a decrease in blood pressure. Additionally, it may influence blood sugar regulation and metabolic processes. While green coffee also contains caffeine, the levels are lower than those in regular coffee.

Despite claims suggesting its efficacy in treating conditions such as obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol, there is currently insufficient scientific evidence to support these assertions.  

There are not enough studies about green coffee yet. Some studies showed that people might lose weight after consuming a certain amount of green coffee and continue the habit for 2 months. However, there is no significant study to determine whether they would regain weight if they had stopped consuming green coffee

However, green coffee quickly caught the attention of media outlets, health bloggers, and supplement manufacturers, leading to widespread publicity and consumer interest. The idea that green coffee could offer a natural and effective solution for weight management without the need for drastic dietary changes or exercise routines, resonated with many individuals seeking to improve their health.

Additionally, the high antioxidant content of green coffee beans, particularly chlorogenic acid, contributed to its appeal. Antioxidants are known for their potential to combat oxidative stress and inflammation in the body, leading to claims of various health benefits beyond weight loss, such as improved heart health, blood sugar regulation, and cognitive function.

As the hype surrounding green coffee continued to grow, it became a popular ingredient in dietary supplements marketed for weight loss and overall wellness. Despite some controversy and mixed scientific evidence regarding its efficacy, the allure of green coffee as a natural and holistic approach to health and weight management has persisted, ensuring its continued prominence in the health and wellness landscape.
